Q&A: Michael Salomone on Five Years, One Loss, and What's Left to Prove

April 15, 2026 · By Dana Whitfield, Staff Writer

Q: Take me back to April 2020. Did any part of you think this would still be going five years later? A: 'Not even a little. It was a bit. We had a spreadsheet with, like, six names on it. I genuinely thought we'd forget about it by summer.'

Q: The 2022 loss to Jake Winslow — you talk about it more than anyone would expect from a champion. Why? A: 'Because it's the most useful thing that ever happened to my technique. If I'd kept winning on instinct, the Spiral never gets built. I'd rather tell that story than pretend I've never lost.'

Q: Judges have never assessed you a cleanliness penalty. Is that something you actively think about mid-cut? A: 'Every single cut. It's not optional for me — clean or it doesn't count, in my head, regardless of what the clock says.'

Q: Does it bother you that you've never competed in Hilo? A: 'People bring that up constantly. Honestly — no promises, but I'm looking at the Aloha Invitational schedule for a future season. Hana's the only real gap on my record and I know it.'

Q: Last one. Retirement rumors come up every offseason. A: 'I've heard them every year since 2022. I'm still cutting. Ask me again after Nationals.'
